We had the chance to try Astor Bastian on a Tuesday night, and overall, it was a thoughtful, well-paced experience in a very cool setting. The restaurant is tucked into a renovated Gold Coast greystone, and the layout still feels like a home—rooms broken up in a way that gives each dining space its own vibe. It feels polished but personal, not stuffy.
The Food
We worked our way across the menu and tried a little bit of everything:
Tuna Carpaccio – This was one of the hits of the night. Great texture, almost had a savory depth to it that gave it a meat-like richness without being overpowering. Clean, layered, and really well done.
Tortilla Española – Classic egg, onion, and potato done in that Spanish style. Ours came out a bit on the cooler side temperature-wise, but the flavor made up for it. Would definitely order again.
Wagyu Steak – Perfectly cooked, simply seasoned, and paired with a finishing salt that actually added something (not just for show). It wasn’t drowned in butter or sauce—it let the meat speak.
Besugo Fish – Cooked well, flaky and clean, though the flavor of the fish leaned a bit stronger than we usually like. Probably just the nature of the fish, not the kitchen.
Rice & Artichokes (side) – Unexpectedly one of our favorite parts of the meal. Earthy, savory, and really well balanced. The artichokes were tender and added great contrast.
Service & Atmosphere
Service here is top-tier. Attentive without being overbearing. Our server paced things well, reset silverware and plates between each course without prompting, and made great recommendations throughout the meal.
The space itself adds to the charm. It’s not trendy or loud—it feels like someone took care to preserve the original bones of the house and build a dining experience around them. You’re not crammed into a banquet hall; you’re placed in a room with character.
The Verdict
Astor Bastian feels like a restaurant that knows what it’s doing. It’s not flashy, but it’s well-executed—from the hospitality to the plating. You can tell the team has fine-dining roots but wants to make the experience feel intimate.
If you’re looking for a spot that nails both service and ambiance, this is a strong pick. And while not everything was a knockout, the overall meal had more highs than anything else. A place I’d return to—and recommend—for a quieter night where the food matters, but so does the setting
