LaScarola
It doesn’t get more old school than La Scarola. Walking in feels like stepping straight into a classic Chicago Italian joint—walls lined with celebrity photos, red sauce in the air, and the kind of energy that’s loud in the best way.
We went with a group of five and kept it simple: pasta, risotto, vodka sauce, and meatballs all around.
The Food
I was pleasantly surprised by the gluten-free pasta—not always a guarantee at spots like this. It held up well, had good texture, and the vodka sauce was rich and comforting. They didn’t make a big deal about the substitution, which I appreciate, and the staff seemed to handle it without hesitation. For anyone gluten-free, it’s nice to have a classic Italian option where you’re not sidelined.
Anthony went for the risotto, which was creamy and full of flavor, and everyone else leaned into traditional pasta dishes with vodka sauce or meatballs—clean plates all around.
The Vibe
La Scarola is pure throwback. It’s cozy, a little chaotic, and full of character. The kind of place where you shout across the table, sip red wine out of a short glass, and feel like you’ve been coming for years—even if it’s your first time.
The Verdict
La Scarola delivers what it promises: classic, unapologetic Italian comfort food. And for gluten-free diners like me, it’s a rare find that doesn’t make you feel like an afterthought. It’s not the fanciest Italian in the city, but it’s full of heart—and sometimes, that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
